Video Junkyard Podcast

Do you ever get a flash of a memory of a movie you saw as a child, but can’t remember the name? Perhaps you caught it on TV while staying up later than you should have. Or maybe you never saw it, but you recognize the cover art from the neighborhood video store around the block. At the Video Junkyard, we dig up these forgotten films and franchises and see if they still hold up in the digital age. Hosts Erik Gulbrandsen, Joe Peterson and Ryan Steiskal will look at the best, the worst, and the best of the worst.

The Video Junkyard Podcast crew gets ready for a scrumptious Thanksgiving season with the delectable 1987 horror/sci-fi/comedy cult film "Bad Taste"! The feature film debut of film master Peter Jackson tells the story of "The Boys" - a covert supernatural and interplanetary defense team in New Zealand who must stop Lord Crumb and his alien fiends from turning people into slop in an intergalactic fast food franchise. It's funny, charming, and nauseating all at the same time. But does the origin work of the creator of the Lord of the Rings films hold a torch to his later efforts? Check out the film (for free) at TubiTV then join us for the discussion on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

This week we watched the 1985 sci-fi drama "The Quiet Earth." This one was picked by our patron Scott Stewart. Thanks, Scott!
When everyone around him vanishes overnight, scientist Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) finds himself seemingly the only person on the planet. The isolation initially drives him to the brink of suicide, but eventually Zac adapts to a day-to-day routine. After meeting two other survivors, Joanne (Alison Routledge) and Api (Peter Smith), a Maori, the trio roams New Zealand trying to understand what caused everyone else to disappear, why they remained behind -- and whether disaster will strike again.

Happy Halloween, junkyard denizens. This year is our zaniest Halloween yet. In week three of our month-long Halloween celebration, we talk about a lost classic you have to see to believe. That's right, it's the musical comedy "Rockula".
"Ralph (Dean Cameron) is a sexually frustrated vampire who suffers from a peculiar curse. He's condemned for eternity to watch his one true love, Mona (Tawny Fere), be murdered by a ham bone. Now it's 1990, and Ralph is determined to break the cycle of reincarnation and death. But, before he can think about saving Mona's life, his first order of business is winning her affection. But with such a pedigree, how does it hold up? Does this version of The Wolfman have bite, or is it a bag of fleas? Check out the latest episode to find out!

VJP 220 Bubba Ho-Tep

Friday Oct 07, 2022

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast we are TCB on some redneck, soul-suckin', sh*tter-house wall-defacing mummy sombitch! That's right - we take a look at the 2002 Don Coscarelli film "Bubba Ho-Tep" staring Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis (seriously). When an elderly Elvis Presely (not dead, but living out the last few years of his life in a rural Texas retirement home after a botched lifestyle swap with an impersonator) notices some evil "scuttlin'" around the retirement home and the suspicious deaths of a number of residents, he teams up with John F. Kennedy (also not dead but the victim of a conspiracy where he his brain was swapped with a bag of sand. Oh and he's been dyed black) to stop an evil mummy dressed as a cowboy who has been feeding off of the residents' souls. Through their anuses.
We aren't kidding.
Campbell's Elvis and Davis' Kennedy MUST be seen to believed.
