Video Junkyard Podcast
Do you ever get a flash of a memory of a movie you saw as a child, but can’t remember the name? Perhaps you caught it on TV while staying up later than you should have. Or maybe you never saw it, but you recognize the cover art from the neighborhood video store around the block. At the Video Junkyard, we dig up these forgotten films and franchises and see if they still hold up in the digital age. Hosts Erik Gulbrandsen, Joe Peterson and Ryan Steiskal will look at the best, the worst, and the best of the worst.

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast we are TCB on some redneck, soul-suckin', sh*tter-house wall-defacing mummy sombitch! That's right - we take a look at the 2002 Don Coscarelli film "Bubba Ho-Tep" staring Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis (seriously). When an elderly Elvis Presely (not dead, but living out the last few years of his life in a rural Texas retirement home after a botched lifestyle swap with an impersonator) notices some evil "scuttlin'" around the retirement home and the suspicious deaths of a number of residents, he teams up with John F. Kennedy (also not dead but the victim of a conspiracy where he his brain was swapped with a bag of sand. Oh and he's been dyed black) to stop an evil mummy dressed as a cowboy who has been feeding off of the residents' souls. Through their anuses.
We aren't kidding.
Campbell's Elvis and Davis' Kennedy MUST be seen to believed.

This week, Ryan turns us on to a modern classic we've never seen.
Be Kind Rewind (2008)
While attempting to sabotage the local power plant, freeloader Jerry accidentally becomes magnetized and wipes all of the videos at the Be Kind Rewind rental store. The store owner, Mr. Fletcher, is already facing closure, and now the few customers he has have nothing to watch. When one regular asks for `Ghostbusters,' acting manager Mike and Jerry cobble together a 20-minute remake using an old camcorder.

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, the guys look at a relatively recent film that slipped under the radar - the 2017 comedy/drama/fantasy/horror/arts&crafts film "Dave Made a Maze". Directed by Bill Watterson (not the cartoonist), the film tells the story of Dave. He makes a maze.
That's about it...
Not really though. Through the use of impressive visual and practical effects, Dave Made a Maze takes us on a journey into a struggling artist's labyrinthine mind in a spot-on metaphor for the pitfalls of the creative process. Riddled with humor and sight gags, does the contemporary cult film hit all the notes, or is it one for the trash bin? On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, Erik, Ryan, and Joe review "The Convent" (dir. Mike Mendez, starring Adrienne Barbeau, Joanna Canton, Richard Trapp, Dax Miller) - a horror comedy from 2000 about a group of college students who break into a supposedly haunted convent where demons begin possessing everyone.
Yep. That ole' chestnut.
Clearly inspired by Evil Dead 2, Demons, and Night of the Demons, this one definitely has intentional laughs as well as schlocky gore. But is this a horror/comedy? A horror so bad that it's a comedy? Or something in between?

This week we discuss a 2nd Kevin Smith movie. "Chasing Amy" is the director's romantic comedy that was an enormous critical success in 1997. We discuss if this film still feels relevant and is accurate "ahead of its time" or is strictly a product of 1997.

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, Ryan and Joe take a look at the 1987 horror film "The Gate". Starring a young Stephen Dorff, The Gate tells the story of two young boys who accidentally open a portal to Hell in their suburban neighborhood while their parents are on vacation. But it was the 80's...who didn't do that at least a few times? While full of 80's fashion, slang, and tropes, The Gate has become a cult classic. But does it stand the test of time? On this holy episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, we take a look at the 1999 comedy fantasy film "Dogma" written and directed by Kevin Smith. The star-sudded cast tells of two fallen angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) who find a loophole back to heaven that would undo all of creation. Trying to stop them are a faith-doubting Planned Parenthood counselor (Linda Fiorentino), the Metatron (Alan Rickman), the 13th apostle (Chris Rock), a muse (Salma Hayek), and two prophets (Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes). The film sparked considerable controversy upon its release, but how does it hold up and compare to the modern climate of public opinion (or ours)? Check out the latest episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!
