Video Junkyard Podcast
Do you ever get a flash of a memory of a movie you saw as a child, but can’t remember the name? Perhaps you caught it on TV while staying up later than you should have. Or maybe you never saw it, but you recognize the cover art from the neighborhood video store around the block. At the Video Junkyard, we dig up these forgotten films and franchises and see if they still hold up in the digital age. Hosts Erik Gulbrandsen, Joe Peterson and Ryan Steiskal will look at the best, the worst, and the best of the worst.

Happy New Year from the Video Junkyard crew! We took a little holiday break this year but not to worry - we are back with a new review! This week we take a look at the 1974 classic horror film "Black Christmas". Directed by Bob Clark, written by A. Roy Moore, and starring Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, Andrea Martin, Lynne Griffin and John Saxon, Black Christmas is one of the first (if not THE first) telling of the "stranger in the house with the babysitter"-style slasher films. Taking place during the Christmas season, a group of sorority sisters are preparing for the holiday break when a derranged caller ("The Moaner") keeps calling and harrassing them. But soon the calls become more threatening. And then worse.
One of the more inspirational/impactful films on the horror genre, Black Christmas has beeb remade multiple times. But how does it hold up in early 2023? Check out the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast we continue our annual Christmas movie marathon with a long-time fan favorite (yet often forgotten holiday film) Gremlins! This 1984 classic was directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus and stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyte Axton, and an early role by Corey Feldman. When a father gives his son Billy (Galligan) a strange pet for Christmas, the creature - a Mogwai named Gizmo - he tells him to follow three important rules for caring for the creature: never bring him out into bright light, never get him wet, and never EVER feed him after midnight. When Billy accidentally breaks the last two rules, a bunch of new mogwais are created and transform into mischievious and monstrous gremlins that wreak havoc to their small midwestern town. With voice talents by Howie Mandel and Frank Welker to round out that cast, Gremlins was a smash hit in 1984. But how does it hold up in 2022? This week's movie was selected by our esteemed patron Tony Rodriguez. It's one we, collectively, had never seen before, and WHOA! is it something. If the poster art and show title weren't a giveaway, it's the 1994 Italian horror classic Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man).
Something is causing the dead to rise from their graves as flesh-eating zombies, and cemetery custodian Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett) grows tired of killing them all for the second time. However, the town politicians won't listen to him, so Francesco is on his own. One day, he falls for a beautiful woman (Anna Falchi) whose husband has recently died -- but their affair is tragically interrupted by zombies, sending Francesco into a tailspin of madness and woe.

This week we continue our deep dive into the early work of Peter Jackson. Ryan forced us to watch the perverted puppet picture "Meet the Feebles". This is another of those movies that truly has to be seen to be believed. Join us for our discussion!
"Fame-seeking members of the animal kingdom experience the sleazier side of show business in this puppet-filled parody."

The Video Junkyard Podcast crew gets ready for a scrumptious Thanksgiving season with the delectable 1987 horror/sci-fi/comedy cult film "Bad Taste"! The feature film debut of film master Peter Jackson tells the story of "The Boys" - a covert supernatural and interplanetary defense team in New Zealand who must stop Lord Crumb and his alien fiends from turning people into slop in an intergalactic fast food franchise. It's funny, charming, and nauseating all at the same time. But does the origin work of the creator of the Lord of the Rings films hold a torch to his later efforts? Check out the film (for free) at TubiTV then join us for the discussion on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

This week we watched the 1985 sci-fi drama "The Quiet Earth." This one was picked by our patron Scott Stewart. Thanks, Scott!
When everyone around him vanishes overnight, scientist Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) finds himself seemingly the only person on the planet. The isolation initially drives him to the brink of suicide, but eventually Zac adapts to a day-to-day routine. After meeting two other survivors, Joanne (Alison Routledge) and Api (Peter Smith), a Maori, the trio roams New Zealand trying to understand what caused everyone else to disappear, why they remained behind -- and whether disaster will strike again.

Happy Halloween, junkyard denizens. This year is our zaniest Halloween yet. In week three of our month-long Halloween celebration, we talk about a lost classic you have to see to believe. That's right, it's the musical comedy "Rockula".
"Ralph (Dean Cameron) is a sexually frustrated vampire who suffers from a peculiar curse. He's condemned for eternity to watch his one true love, Mona (Tawny Fere), be murdered by a ham bone. Now it's 1990, and Ralph is determined to break the cycle of reincarnation and death. But, before he can think about saving Mona's life, his first order of business is winning her affection. He does that by starting Rockula -- a rock band that's sure to stake a claim on her heart."

On this howlingly entertaining episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, we revisit the 2010 remake of "The Wolfman" directed by Joe Johnston and starring Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving, and Anthony Hopkins. While the original 1941 film is a timeless classic of Universal Monster films, this remake brings in a star-studded cast, professional makeup artist Rick Baker, and film veteran Joe Johnston to update the tragic tale of lycanthropic terror. But with such a pedigree, how does it hold up? Does this version of The Wolfman have bite, or is it a bag of fleas? Check out the latest episode to find out!
