Video Junkyard Podcast

Do you ever get a flash of a memory of a movie you saw as a child, but can’t remember the name? Perhaps you caught it on TV while staying up later than you should have. Or maybe you never saw it, but you recognize the cover art from the neighborhood video store around the block. At the Video Junkyard, we dig up these forgotten films and franchises and see if they still hold up in the digital age. Hosts Erik Gulbrandsen, Joe Peterson and Ryan Steiskal will look at the best, the worst, and the best of the worst.

This week Joe and Erik take a look at Dario Argento's Phenomena (1985). The film was an early starring role for Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly and co-stars film favorite Donald Pleasence. Do you think this cult classic holds up today?

Welcome back to the Junkyard! It's our 25th episode and this week Joe and Erik take a look another remake that is (arguably) better than it's "original"... Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is a modern classic of the horror/sci-fi genre but is it still scary today? Have a listen and see what they think.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I know we did. Due to our travels, schedules and an unfortunate illness VJP did not get a chance to record a fresh episode for you this week. However that doesn't mean there isn't something new... This episode was recorded a while back but never released. We keep a few around for just such an occasion. Without any further ado... I give you the 90's video store cult classic... Prehysteria!

Vampires - stake through the heard, garlic, crosses, mirrors, holy water...
Werewolves - silver bullets, full moon...
But to each other, they are mortal enemies!!!... or are they?!
On this special episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, Erik and Joe discuss this increasingly common horror trope - Vampires VS Werewolves!
Where did this concept come from?! The answer might surprise you!
Tune in as we talk about this fascinating example of a paradigm shift in myth and legend!

This week we look at Oliver Stone's take on the Quentin Tarantino story "Natural Born Killers". This film would go on to become one of the all time most controversial films due to it's "graphic depiction of violence" and supposedly inspiring "copycat" crimes. Question is: Is it worth all the hype? Also how close is the film to the original idea by QT.
Joe and Erik talk a bit about American violence and the statements made by this film. Unfortunately the week we recorded this episode there was ANOTHER mass shooting incident in the news. It really puts our conversation in perspective. Please join us and join the discussion.

This week on VJP we start a two part special on the work of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. Instead of doing a career retrospective in this case we decided to take a look at two films that Tarantino wrote but did not direct.
Part 1 features the 1993's True Romance written by QT and directed by Tony Scott. Joe and Erik talk at length about their thoughts on this film as well as it's style. Is it still Tarantino-y even in the hands of another filmmaker? Have a listen and see.

And this is our amazing Halloween Spooktacular! It's crammed full of more delights than you can fit in your trick or treat bag. Joe and Erik talk about three lesser known Halloween classics(?).
Happy Halloween to everyone out there. What is your favorite film to watch on Halloween?

This week on the Video Junkyard Podcast we take a look at cult classic "The Deadly Spawn". This 80's b-movie treasure is much loved among those who appreciate gritty 80s sci-fi but what will we make of it. Is it an all time classic or Z grade garbage? (or both!) Also don't forget to weigh in yourself. Drop us a line and let us know what you think of The Deadly Spawn.

This week in the Junkyard Joe and Erik continue to examine the Exorcist prequels. This week's discussion focuses on "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" directed by Paul Schrader. This film was made first but not finished and released until after "Renny Harlin's Exorcist: The Beginning."
This is a film that for all practical purposes was made twice by two different filmmakers. This makes it very interesting to compare the two films.

Look what we found in the Junkyard this week. A couple of prequels to a popular horror franchise. Joe and Erik spend some time with each version of this "film so nice they made it twice".
This week we look Renny Harlin's 2004 nightmare "Exorcist: The Beginning".
Which of the two films do you think was better? Tune in and see what we thought of the films. This is a unique situation where a film was made twice by two different directors. Certainly food for thought.
