Video Junkyard Podcast

Do you ever get a flash of a memory of a movie you saw as a child, but can’t remember the name? Perhaps you caught it on TV while staying up later than you should have. Or maybe you never saw it, but you recognize the cover art from the neighborhood video store around the block. At the Video Junkyard, we dig up these forgotten films and franchises and see if they still hold up in the digital age. Hosts Erik Gulbrandsen, Joe Peterson and Ryan Steiskal will look at the best, the worst, and the best of the worst.

The fourth and final installment in our "1990s movies based on 1930s comic strip characters" series is here. This week we look at the 1996 film The Phantom starring Billy Zane and Kristy Swanson. This is yet another that guys remember enjoying in their youth but how did the Phantom mature? Is this one a treasure or is it better left back in the jungle? Listen in and find out.

Who's Ready for Part 3 of our (get ready for it).... 1990s movies based on comic strip characters from the 1930s series. That's right this week we look at the Alec Baldwin action/comedy(?) The Shadow (1994). This is one the guys remember liking in their youth... does it hold up? Who Knows what evil lurks within this film? The Shadow knows! or does he??

We like to try new things. Free Rentals is new kind of show from the VJP. It's the little bits that keep having to be edited out of film review shows due to length. This one contains our look at recently released movie trailers affectionately entitled "Trailer Talk"! And we just get a chance to chat about movies in the free form. It's everything you didn't know you were missing and we hope you enjoy it.
Fear not! Our film reviews will keep coming every week as well as more TrashTalk discussion shows. These Free Rentals are a bonus show and will continue to come out... whenever we feel like it. I mean... it's free, give it a try.

Episode 81 The Rocketeer

Friday Jan 17, 2020

Friday Jan 17, 2020

This week on the podcast, we continue our series on serial heroes of the 1930s (as portrayed in movies from the 1990s and reviewed in 2020)with a look at the 1991 Disney production of "The Rocketeer". Our film this week is actually a bit of an odd-ball; The Rocketeer is based on a comic book from the 1980s, but is heavily inspired by similar characters from the 1930s... so we are counting it!
The Rockteer stars a huge case including Bill Campell, Alan Arkin, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Sorvino, and Timothy Dalton all under the direction of Joe Johnston.
Does the Rocketeer soar to new heights nearly 30 years later, or does it crash and burn? Check out the latest episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!

Episode 80 Dick Tracy

Friday Jan 10, 2020

Friday Jan 10, 2020

Happy New Year! We kick off 2020 with the first of our four-part series on (and stay with me here) movies from the 1990s that are based/inspired by heroes of the 1930s that we are reviewing in 2020. Whew! Everyone get that? Great!
We start our series off with the 1990 film "Dick Tracy" which was produced-by, directed-by, and starring Warren Beatty in the role of the titular detective. Along with Beatty is an all-star cast including Al Pacino, Madonna, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Paul Sorvino, William Forsythe, and Dustin Hoffman. And that doesn't even count the cameos!
So how does it hold up after 30 years? Is Dick Tracy still knocking out the bizarre bad guys or has this slipped comfortably into a desk job?
Check out our take on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

Friday Dec 20, 2019

This week the Junkyard boys welcome friend of the show and audio auteur Nathaniel Lee Voelker to talk about his favorite forgotten classic 1982's The Flight of Dragons. This animated Television movie was produced by Rankin and Bass who are known for their many family films throughout the 70s and 80s. Is this worth digging out of the limestone or, like a dragon, is a mostly hot air? Tune in and be enlightened... or at the very least, entertained.
Have you seen it? Do you love it? Hate it? Let us know your thoughts. Post a comment at the Video Junkyard Podcast group on Facebook or send us an email at VideoJunkyardPodcast@gmail.com. Remember if you take the time to write it, we'll take the time to read it. Hope to hear from you soon!
