Video Junkyard Podcast

Do you ever get a flash of a memory of a movie you saw as a child, but can’t remember the name? Perhaps you caught it on TV while staying up later than you should have. Or maybe you never saw it, but you recognize the cover art from the neighborhood video store around the block. At the Video Junkyard, we dig up these forgotten films and franchises and see if they still hold up in the digital age. Hosts Erik Gulbrandsen, Joe Peterson and Ryan Steiskal will look at the best, the worst, and the best of the worst.

This week on the Video Junkyard Podcast we start our Listener Picks! You picked them, we watched them, and we're still recovering. To kick things off, listener ReBecca Hunt-Foster chose the 1988 sci-fi family comedy "Mac and Me". This totally original, never-before-seen story involves a a young boy who befriends a small alien who has lost his way on planet Earth. While trying to avoid government/scientists/scary people in lab coats, they try everything to save the creature who also has powers for some reason. Oh and there are numerous blatant product placements. And a break dance contest at McDonalds.
ReBecca.... whatever we did...we're sorry.
Check out the movie on TubiTV.com (we dare you) and then check out the Video Junkyard Podcast to join the discussion!

This week it's "The X From Outer Space" for the third and final installment of the Kaiju Kountdown. We are celebrating the release of the new "Godzilla vs Kong" movie that comes at the end of the month by watching some of our other favorite Kaiju (giant monster) movies.
"The X From Outer Space" is a silly slice of 60s nostalgia that's got to be seen to be believed. Stop off at HBOMax (if you will) and give it a look and then join us as we break down this attack from the chicken headed monstrosity Guilala.

The Kaiju Kountdown to "Godzilla vs. Kong" continues as we check out "Shin Godzilla". This contemporary reimagining of Godzilla rewrites the rules of the franchise and presents it in a modern light but we think you'll also find all the familiar themes and monster smashing action you've come to expect. Join us for our discussion of this modern classic and come back next time for the third and final week of our Kaiju Kountdown.

This week on the Video Junkyard Podcast we kick off our Kaiju Countdown as we prepare for the upcoming release of Godzilla vs Kong! We're all big fans of the big green guy here on the VJP, so we thought we'd check out some lesser-celebrated films involving Godzilla and other mega monsters!
In this episode, we review the 1989 Toho film Godzilla vs Biollante! When cells from Godzilla's dorsal fins are spliced with a rose bush and a scientist's daughter (I know, right?!), the results are a permutating polypheme of produce! Who will win in this ultimate smackdown between the Terrible Titan from Tokyo and the genetic greenhouse grown gargantuan? Check out the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!

This time we travel in the Police Box to Episode 8, otherwise known as the episode where Assad and I talk about Phobos. Phobos is an audio adventure starring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor that was the fourth story in the first series of Eighth Doctor adventures produced by Big Finish. Now that we're 100% clear let's jump in the TARDIS and off we go!

This week we're checking out the 1983 animated fantasy epic "Fire and Ice". Legendary artists Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta join forces to create the ultimate sword and sorcery showdown. Is this one as great as it sounds? Listen in and we'll see if it still holds up. Is this one still Fire or should be left alone in Nekron's frozen waste?

What do you really need to survive the apocalypse? GUNPOWDER! We know this because of important prophetic film works like "Raiders of the Sun". It was made in the 90s but it looks like future imagined in the 70s. The big question of course is... is this one worth digging out or is it better off left stranded in the desert quarry it was shot in. Join us for the movie and chat. What else have you got going on?

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast we uncover the 1985 sci-fi/horror film "Creature" (aka Titan Find) directed by William Malone and staring Stan Ivar, Wendy Schaal, Lyman Ward, Annette McCarthy, Robert Jaffe, Diane Salinger, and Klaus Kinski (who is creepy as hell yet NOT the titular "creature"...). This is another one of those "saw it at the video store and never rented it" picks for Erik, Ryan, and Joe. Is this poor-man's Alien a hidden gem, or is this just more space junk? Check out the movie on TubiTV (for FREE) then join us for the discussion on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

If you were a horror section regular at your local video depot circa 2000 you probably didn't rent this movie about 100 different times but I'm sure you remember the art from the box. This week we're talking about Full Moon Features' "The Dead Hate the Living!". Watch along for free on Tubi.tv and then join in and help us decide if this one is worth resurrecting or if it should stay forever banished to the land of the dead.

EP VJP 135 Screamers (1981)

Friday Feb 05, 2021

Friday Feb 05, 2021

This week on the Video Junkyard Podcast, Erik and Joe continue wading around in the swamp of trashy fishmen cinema to bring you their review of Screamers (1981), also known as Island of the Fishmen! While the ad campaigns said these monsters "turn people inside out"...that never really happens. But what does happen is a lot of subplots stuffed into a heavily modified low-budget Italian horror film. So does "Screamers" swim, or is it just a flop? Check out the movie on TubiTV.com for free, then join us for the discussion on the Video Junkyard Podcast!
