Originally envisioned by director Richard Stanley, the film stars Marlon Brando (in one of his weirdest performances ever), Val Kilmer (just out of Batman's cowl), and an incredibly wasted David Thewlis and Fairuza Balk. Based on the classic tale by H.G. Wells of a mad scientists on a remote island who has created animal/human hybrids, the behind-the-scenes drama (like removing Stanley as director a week into shooting and replacing him with John Frankenheimer) almost improve and parallel the bizarreness on the screen.
